Administrative HistoryN Greening and Sons was established in Warrington in July 1843 by Nathaniel, Timothy, Noah and John Greening. This initial partnership was dissolved in July 1851, and in December 1853 Timothy left the partnership, leaving the business to be carried on by Noah and John.
In 1883 the business, then carried on by Nathaniel and Linnaeus Greening, became a limited liability company, as N Greening and Sons Ltd., 'to carry on the business of wire manufacturers, wire workers, brush manufacturers, metal perforators and engineers'. It was based at the Britannia Works, Bewsey Road in Warrington. Another factory was opened at Hayes in Middlesex in 1924. In the course of the 20th century, the company acquired or established a number of wholly-owned subsidiaries beginning with the Greening Wire Company Ltd in 1932; by 1945 the Dressing and Screening Co. Ltd. was also a subsidiary. In 1950 F and G W Stonier and Co. Ltd, specialists in wire products for the paper industry, was acquired, followed by Sankey Green Wire Weaving Co. Ltd. (incorporated 1942) in 1958 and Finch and Godwin, of Bristol, in 1961, later renamed N Greening (Bristol) Ltd. The Company took a controlling interest in Primes, Greenings (Pty) Ltd in South Africa in 1956. In 1962, the Company acquired the British Wedge Wire Co. Ltd and its subsidiary Modern Mechanisation Ltd. In 1965 the Company was re-organised, and N Greening (Warrington) Ltd. and N Greening (Hayes) Ltd. established to take over all the manufacturing and trading activities of the parent Company. In the following year the Company acquired Pall-Ulster Ltd, which was re-named Greenings (Ulster) Ltd , and established Greenings Zambia Ltd . N Greening (St Helens) Ltd. and Screentex Ltd were incorporated in 1968. Endecotts (Filters) Ltd and Endecotts (Test Seives) Ltd were acquired in 1970. In 1971 the Hayes subsidiary was closed and a new company N Greening (london) Ltd established. Wedco Conveyors Ltd and Modern Mechanisation Ltd were renamed Greening (Mechanisation) Ltd in 1970, and ceased trading in 1972. In the same year the company established Metal Belts Ltd., and acquired Hunter Wire Products Ltd in Australia, while F and G W Stonier and Co. Ltd ceased trading.
The Company was taken over in 1975 (see D 6457/75), by a company which then traded as N Greening Ltd
